Tamiya 1/32 F4U-1 Birdcage Corsair - by Dave Hansen

This is Tamiya 1/32 scale F4U-1 Birdcage Corsair, built to depict the prototype Goodyear FG-1 license-built version. Paints were a combination of Model Master custom mixed enamels for the interior, and exterior was painted with Tamiya White Surface Primer (undersides) and the Mr Color US Navy WWII Gross Sea Blue and Intermediate Blue lacquers. Insignia were painted on using Mal Mayfield's Miracle Masks, using Tamiya White Surface Primer and Mr Color Thunderbird Blue.

The model depicts the often-misinterpreted "Graded Tone" scheme, which intended to blend the three colors seamlessly.

The Barracuda Studios F4U cockpit placard decals were used, along with the Corsair/Hellcat "Slick" tyres. These were painted with Testor's Rubber, Metalizer non buffing aluminum, and airbrushed with heavily thinned light gray to depict the concrete dust picked up from the newly-paved Akron ramp. They worked out very well by adhering to the instructions. The plane is depicted as factory-fresh so there is very little weathering to speak of.

The model also features a brass pitot tube and antenna mast from G-Factor models, and the antenna installation was done with elastic thread, a carefully bent copper wire antenna hook and a piece of heat stretched tubing.

My very first 1/32 model and is easily the nicest model kit I ever built - sublime.
