Tamiya 1/32 P-51D - by Nathan Laporte

Petie 2nd
I painted the plane using Aclad Polished Chrome for fuselage, and using various Aluminum shades to pick out different panels. I painted the wings with White aluminum as well. The blue is a mix of 2 different Tamiya blues, as well as some white so that I matched it with the decal of nose art. Previous to the Blue paint I added a layer of AK Interactive Worn effects so that I could slightly chip the blue paint. I added external tank fuel lines with copper wire and plastic wire sheathing as the rubber coupling for the tanks, and added wire for the clamps. The antennae wire is made from stretched sprue and is connected at each end with a handmade spring. Inside the cockpit along with all the great products from Barracuda that fit perfectly with the kit parts I added wood grain detail to the floor. I then sprayed some more AK Worn effects and masked off the areas where the black non-skid surface was for the pilots feet. I then "worn" this area by chipping off the paint where the pilots feet would naturally do this.

For further weathering I added a mix of rust, brown, and black oils to create a medium color wash and applied it over the entire plane instead of trying to pin wash it because of the shear volume of rivets and panel lines. I let it slightly dry and used a dry soft cloth and wiped off the excess. No need for thinner. I added various pigments from MIG Productions to weather the exhaust and oxidize them. I airbrushed the exhaust streaks along the plane and used black and brown oil to create the oil streaks.

Overall you cannot go wrong with this Tamiya kit, it is truly amazing as many of us have already found out. Adding the Barracuda details to this wonderful kit really helps make it a masterpiece! This is my second time building a Tamiya 1/32 Mustang and each time I have used the Barracuda products and absolutely love the detail I get from them. What I really like most is the great instructions, and the ease of separating the parts from their resin plugs.
